It seems like just yesterday that we were speculating about whether ( or should that be weather) or not the groundhog would see his shadow. Here we are again, another year and another February 2, wondering if that most famous of earth dwellers Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his hole to see his shadow. According to folklore, if he emerges from his burrow and sees his image outlined on the ground from the sun in the sky he will return underground to wait out six more dreadful weeks of winter weather. Of course in recent years the phrase groundhog day has taken on new meaning to define the futility of a boring existence. Popularized by the 1993 American comedy film by the same name this film gave new meaning to the phrase day to day. Directed by Harold Ramis and starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, this movie about monotony was stuck in perpetual rewind as it portrayed Murray as the scroogelike weatherman who deals with the mundane in classic dripping with sarcasm fashion. Perhaps the line in the movie that tells it all is when Ned says ro Phil “Hey now, don’t tell me that you don’t remember me, because I sure as heckfire remember you.” All this and waking up every day at six-o’clock EVERY morning.
Is this a metaphor for your existence? Is your job boring and dull? Many people might think that being a dentist is painfully mundane and that teeth are all the same. You know, youv’e seen one tooth you’ve seen them all. As a dentist for thirty years I can assure you that this profession is anything but boring. All teeth are not created equal and every mouth is different. Some people have little mouths while of course some have really big mouths. Others have big teeth while others have little pearly ones. Some enamel seems to be harder than others and some is soft. The color of some teeth can be vastly different from other peoples teeth. None the less, I have after doing this much dentistry through the years, pretty much seen it all! And February 2 will still be groundhog day. I’m rooting for a cloudy forecast.
