Fast horses and beautiful women, the twin spires and the mini marathon. Gala parties, derby hats, red roses and lillies for the fillies. Of course, there is food and drink galore. Mint juleps, bourbon balls, chow wagon barbecue and brats and what derby party would be without (sound of the call to the post in the backround) Derby Pie™, the original chocolate nut pie. The perfect finish to a day at the races or the required dessert for out of towners. And not so coincidentally a dentist’s dream. Nuts to break teeth with, lots of sugar to grow decay and sticky chewy gooey filling to pull yours loose. Tastes great…I want more…ouch! I think that I broke something on the backside. Be careful there! All it takes is one wrong move and all bets are off! But oh how good…can I have another piece? Yes, warm it up with whipped cream on top. Not to worry, I’ll just have another mint julep! It won’t hurt furlong!

Everywhere in America we are seeing more of chain store dentistry. It almost seems that there is a dentist on every corner and many of them are of the monotonous, cookie cutter, strip center franchise variety. While this may seem wonderful to the uninitiated consumer as it seems like it provides access and in and out convenience, it might just be missing the mark in terms of the familiarity that comes with a more traditional dentist patient relationship. Because of this, disease processes such as diabetes and oral cancer, hormonal imbalences, throat and swallowing deficiencies and nutritional disorders may be slower to be detected. A long term family dentist can often build a lasting relationship with patients that allows the clinician to get to know the patient’s normal ebbs and flows. With this can come a better understanding of the rythym of patient’s life cycle and what is truly normal for this individual. The family dentist can be the first line of defense in diagnosing diabetes or other metabolic diseases as they may present as a significant change from the normal periodontal health of a patient that has been seen regularly. Think about it, who would you rather see coming in to check up on your oral health, a friendly familiar face or someone different every time that you really don’t know.

Congratulations to the University of Kentucky Wildcats for their victory over the University of Louisville Cardinals in the semi-finals of the 2012 Men’s Basketball NCAA Tournament. Kentucky held off a tenacious Louisville squad to survive in a defensive struggle that occasionally was highlighted by superhuman offensive efforts. Both teams showed exceptional class as they competed almost to exhaustion but still were able to appreciate the intensity of the moment as they embraced respectfully at the end of the game. Congratulations also go out to the University of Louisville Cardinals on a fine season that was punctuated by a Big East Championship and a whirlwind run to the NCAA semi-finals. Kentucky will play tonight against Kansas who was a winner over Ohio State in a down to the wire thriller. Tipoff will be at 9:21p.m. est. in the New Orleans Superdome. This is for all the marbles folks. May the best team win.

Speaking of brackets, orthodontic brackets can be busted too. And,
if you or your teen’s orthodontic brackets are broken or busted that can put you in a tough spot. Especially if your orthodontist has gone to Cancun for a long weekend. At Gerlach Family Dentistry, we are usually open weekends to allow you to schedule appointments so that you don’t miss work or school. So if that bracket gets busted, don’t hesitate to call. We may be able to attend to your dental emergency and give you some peace of mind even if you won’t win a bracket contest. Oh, and by the way, good luck to you and your team!

The regional NCAA basketball tournament is under way and many of the fans are just getting their feet wet…literally. I have it on good authority that there has been a water main break or other plumbing problem in one of the bathrooms at the beautiful new Yum! Center. This may have been why players were slipping on the floor. It appeared that condensation may have been a problem and the source of that moisture while unclear, could have been from this leak. What a shame! This is a state of the art multi-purpose facility that is a crown jewell for the city of Louisville along with Churchill Downs and Louisville Slugger. Let’s hope that the staff gets this taken care of promptly so that the regional swimming championships don’t begin prematurely.

The Kentuckiana area has recently been devastated by severe weather with catastrophic damage from tornadic activity. Families have been uprooted and in some cases destroyed. We, here at Gerlach Family Dentistry would like to send our condolences to those who have experienced loss during this time. We pray to God that you who have been so affected will feel the loving and healing touch of the Father as churches and believers reach out to comfort those in need.
Most of us would like to help those in need at this darkest hour.It has come to my attention that Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky. is accepting gift card donations in the amount of $25 to be given to victims of this terrible tragedy. On Saturday a visit to the American Red Cross in Jeffersonville, In. to drop off water bottles bought to light that they are referring donations of dry foods and water bottles to Sojourn Church in Jeff. Of course, the Red Cross is accepting monetary donations as they asses and coordinate the relief efforts. May God Bless!

When they lay me in the tomb
I love Kentucky
I really do
I love the bluegrass
This much is true
I love Kentucky
I’m Kentucky blue
I love Kentucky
And I love you!

I bet on a Derby horse in Louisville
I’ve been to Bardstown with Jim Beam
Pikevile mountain hike, Moonlite, Kentucky Lake crappie
Corvettes in Bowling Green
The thoroughbred farms in Lexington
She was beautiful
She caught my eye
And then she stole my heart
On my knees I
I begged please marry me
We will never be apart
She said before I do
Say I will marry you
Let’s get things straight
From the start
I will never leave my old Kentucky home

It just felt like it was time. It had been awhile now since we lost our other dog. And the time just felt right. So after finding the right puppy, I put my money down and brought home a new dog. He hasn’t been named yet and there is some serious discussion about that. Who knows, he may remain unnamed. Nonetheless, he sure is cute. And rumor has it that he may have a new cousin as someone else in the family may be expecting. No, it’s not a gift from the stork but an interview with the Golden Retriever Rescue team. If things work out there could soon be two new puppies in the family. The next time you hear about this matter it will be about puppies and babies and why they teethe and chew on just about everything.
